CX Manila I Can Fly Program 2016
Cathay Pacific Aiways Manila has recently wrapped up its second "I Can Fly" Program, a successful 4-day program held from July 26-29, meant to open the eyes of selected Filipino youth to the different aspects of the airline industry, and so to inspire them to soar beyond the limited horizons they might have. The activity was capped by an inspiring graduation ceremony held on July 29, 2016.
PCCCI was once again asked to assist CX Manila town office with this worthwhile event. This year saw the increase in the number of participating students. Apart from 20 students from University of the Philippines Integrated School, another 10 students from ERDA-Tech participated in the program. Participants were chosen from Grade 10 students based on essays they had written as to why they should be given the opportunity to participate in the program. Several of these selected students happened to be PCCCI scholars! PCCCI members, still flying and retired, participated in the event, acting as liaison between the students and Cathay Pacific.
The new Head of Marketing and Sales of CXMnl, Mr. Mike Yeung, was "floored" and amazed by the talent and skills of these kids who demonstrated what "thinking outside the box" is all about, and how resilient they were in coming up with campaign slogans despite limited resources. The kids from UPIS and ERDA were grouped into mixed school teams, allowing them to closely interact with those they weren't familiar with.
Visits to the different departments and sectors of the airline industry gave the students different perspectives in their pursuit of career choices.
The CSR (corporate social responsibility) part of the program, spearheaded by Celina Santos, daughter of our accountant Elena Ongkiko-Santos, was a visit to the DSWD Research and Study Center for Children in Quezon City. Housed here are orphaned, rescued, abused and abandoned infants and children up to 18 years old. The visit brought to the fore for both the student participants as well as the volunteers how fortunate they were no matter what their own situations were. Part of the donations given were airline blankets which were about to be phased out, but put to good use with the need of the center.
The graduation was made more special by the students who, admonished to let their passion fly, and with only a half day to prepare, were able to come up with an original song and poem together with their performances!
Assisting CX with the program was certainly time well-spent for PCCCI members, who once again witnessed how giving the youth opportunities beyond their normal reach uplifted and brought these citizens of tomorrow one step closer to being the best they could be!
Congratulations to the top 3 participants, winners of a trip to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific: Gabriel Aparato (UPIS), Frederico Madero Samonte (UPIS), and J-skie Lagunday (ERDA)! May this only be the beginning of knowing that, "I Can Fly!"
