Castañeda, Nueva Vizcaya Outreach
Typhoon Nona hit the Philippines on December 15, 2015. It dumped approximately 300mm or 12 inches of rain in the hardest hit areas. The heavy rain combined with the rough terrain in the northern region of the Philippines resulted in mudslides in many areas.
One of the hardest hit in Nueva Vizcaya province was the town of Castañeda, where part of the mountain behind the town collapsed into the town and buried much of it under trees, logs and debris.
Grace Gotangco, a PCCCI member who became aware of the town's plight after passing through it on her way home on holiday, posted a video of its situation on Facebook. PCCCI responded by offering to reach out to Castañeda, encouraging Grace to take charge of the relief efforts while PCCCI raised funds for it.
On January 5, 2016, PCCCI met up with town mayor Dr. Annie Buwayan and distributed relief goods to residents of Barangay Loblob Purok 9. There was much joy and gratitude on the part of the residents for this unexpected help.
